Between me and the other world at Jacob's Pillow
Choreographer, director, and Bay Area performance innovator Joanna Haigood explores issues of race and identity in her performance installation, Between me and the other world, on February 22, 2020 at 7pm in collaboration with the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and Bard College at Simon’s Rock, Great Barrington, MA.

Between me and the other world is a dynamic exploration of scholar and civil rights leader W.E.B. DuBois’ seminal work The Souls of Black Folk. This performance installation has been created in collaboration with composer Anthony Brown, media artist David Szlasa, scenic designer Sean Riley, and performing artists Frankie Lee III, Lydia Clinton, Clarissa Dyas, and Erik Lee. Together, these collaborators have created an immersive environment that evokes the identity duality or “double consciousness” described by DuBois.

In the performance installation, audiences are welcome to move around the space and view the performance from different vantage points. Performances will loop promptly every 30-minutes on the hour and half hour with performing artists alternating. Audiences may stay for as many performance loops as they like.

The performance is co-presented by The Town of Great Barrington’s W.E.B. Du Bois Legacy Committee, Bard College at Simon’s Rock, BRIDGE, MCLA Presents!, and MCLA Institute for Arts and Humanities. Additional sponsors include Berkshire Bank Foundation, Greylock Federal Credit Union, and The Du Bois Center at Great Barrington. In partnership with NAACP Berkshire County Branch, Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires, Discover Pittsfield’s 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival, and First Congregational Church, Great Barrington.
Haigood’s week-long residency that precedes the engagement is made possible with additional support from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
